Rising star of London’s underground house and techno scene and French native, Robin Ordell is causing a stir with his deep, bassy productions and regular feats behind the decks. ‘The Show’, his first release for Leftroom looks bound to escalate his ascent.
‘The Show’ first grabbed the attention of label boss Matt Tolfrey when Robin played it at one of the infamous Half Baked Sunday parties where he holds a residency. It made such an impression that Matt immediately approached the DJ booth to find out what it was and by the following week at a lunch meeting, the track was signed even before the food arrived. It has been a highlight of Matt’s sets worldwide ever since and Simon Baker even caused one of those famous ‘sit downs’ on the dancefloor DC10 style when he played the original at Circo Loco in Leeds.
The original in this package is a true statement of intent. ‘The Show’ kicks off with killer bass heavy percussion, clap drums and a crescendo of rhythmic cries. Weaved into its core is a looping sample of music commentary that takes on a mesmeric quality but Ordell truly brings the funk with the infectiously groovy bassline.
The remix artist here, Felipe Venegas, delivers three striking cuts that explore various moods and veneers. In the first mix, Venegas breaks up the percs and layers them with a scattering of cymbals, while still keeping the funky bounce of the original. The slightly more techno orientated ‘Inferno Mix’ creates a darker mood with dubby, atmospheric bass, spooky synths and shuffling drums, born to be played in a murky basement. The ‘Loop Mix’ is the quirkier animal laced with warped synths and inventive touches.
Growing up in Nice, France, Robin Ordell moved to London in 2007 and found himself completely seduced by the thriving underground house and techno scene. Soon he started putting his passion into practice crafting his skills as a DJ with a solid underground house style and within a couple of years Robin was getting booked by Fabric, TBar and Kubicle. Now an East London institution, Sunday party Half Baked was established with Robin firmly at the fore and its phenomenal success has enabled Robin to play alongside the likes of Craig Richards, Seuil, Lee Curtiss, Mayaan Nidam, Le Loup and of course Matt Tolfrey.
