Don Do Dat EP

murmur hit us with their latest release, exhibiting the ever impressive production skills of Marc Ashken on his ‘Don Do Dat EP’

Amidst working on projects for Classic, Hot Waves, Lokee and Save You Records, Marc has been busy preparing to launch his record label, New Shoes; the fruits of which will appear later on in 2011. This, the ‘Don Do Dat EP’ (said in a thick Italian accent), arrives on London based murmur records. The EP fits perfectly in with the string of deep driving house releases that have been delivered by murmur since the label´s inception in 2008 with mulletover´s Geddes as creator and curator. The EP is packed with dance floor perfect, make you move, solid grooves.

The curiously named duo of ‘Sir Ashkenson & The Fabulous Teti’ deliver the A-side, setting the tone of the EP with its rolling, groovy bassline. The simple yet hugely effective vocal hook creeps through the track, underpinned by Marc´s superb drum programming. A pitched down dark voice dominates the breakdown ... ‘the only piece of advice I can give you is don’t leave home without your boyfriend’. Is this behind the naming of the EP? Don Do Dat.... Literally telling us what not to do!?

The first track on the B-side is a remix of ´Do Dat´, a collaboration with Marc´s close friend Floyd Lavine. US producer Anonym provides the honours, following the dance floor suited vibe of the EP. However this is certainly a track for later in the night with its techier edge and rolling, druggy & dubby feel. The breakdown is engulfed in warping sounds, which seem destined to twist the mind.

The original of ´Do Dat´ rounds off the ep, shuffling along on a bed of tribal sounding drums. In an alluring manner, the track develops a melodic twinkling riff, producing a standout element and imbuing it with more of an uplifting feel, contrasting the darker tones of the other tracks superbly.

This record is one not to miss and the relationship between Marc Ashken and murmur records is obviously one that was meant to be.
