2020 Midnight Visions is a label brought to you by 2020Vision with A&R by discerning head and somethinksounds founder Kazim Kazim Kazim. First up is London producer PhOtOmachine breaking through with the ‘On U EP’.

Midnight Visions will strive to bring forward-thinking dance music with a strong visual focus from its bases in Berlin and London and will introduce a range of exciting, new artists. Young Brixton native PhOtOmachine delivers the inaugural release and although only on his second EP release, you’d think he’d spent years conquering dusty old machines after hearing ‘On U’. 

The original tracks drip with electrofunk, energy and style as PhOtOmachine cuts up choice vocals to great effect over his bumpy proto-house grooves. It would sound equally at home in the Hacienda circa 1987, as a dirty Dalston basement next weekend.

Drafted in on remix duties is Funkineven, a kindred spirit to PhOtOmachine who grabs what he likes from house music’s past and feeds it through his personal blender. He rips apart ‘On U’ and starts it again as a jackin house workout that recalls Maurice Fulton at his most unhinged.

The PhOtOmachine EP is a superb statement of intent from a new imprint with all the promise of its forefather channeling a new direction. The follow up will be another killer release from Hyperdub, somethinksounds and Black Orange Juice crew member Ossie.
